Company Profile and History of Yamaha
Yamaha Corporation came into being on October 1, 1987 after its predecessor Nippon Gakki Company Limited changed its official name. That change marked the anniversary of the day that Torakusu Yamaha (April 20 1851 – August 8 1916) established his business, prompted by his repair of a reed organ. Our trademark, "Yamaha" has its origins in the name of our founder.

Torakusu Yamaha was born a retainer of the Tokugawa family in the Kishu region (currently Wakayama prefecture), the third son of astronomer Kounosuke Yamaha. After a childhood spent playing with the tools and instruments of his father while watching him work Torakusu was fascinated by machinery. Proving skilled with his hands he went on to study watch-making in Nagasaki. While there he turned his hand to medical appliances, and in 1884 began visiting hospitals in Hamamatsu to repair medical equipment. In 1887 Torakusu was successful in repairing a reed organ at Hamamatsu's Jinjo elementary school (currently Motoshiro Elementary school), and in 1889 established Yamaha Organ Works as a limited partnership in Hamamatsu. He went on to found Nippon Gakki Company Limited on October 12 1897, becoming the first president of the company.

The fifth season of the popular Yamaha International Piano series at Malvern Theatres coincides with Yamaha’s 125th Anniversary year of celebrations and opens on Friday 12th October 2012 with a recital by Joanna MacGregor, regarded as one of the world’s most innovative musicians.
12th October is the exact date Yamaha was founded in 1887 in Hamamatsu, Japan, and to mark the occasion Joanna MacGregor will perform an inspired programme of works by Beethoven, Bartok and Brahms using Yamaha’s CFX Concert Grand Piano.
The fifth season of the hugely successful series features a performance by Marc-Andre Hamelin on 23rd November, Freddy Kempf on 21st February and culminates on 8th March 2013 with a performance by Steven Osborne. Previous seasons have included sellout concerts by internationally acclaimed pianists, HJ Lim, Steven Kovacevich, François-Frédéric Guy, Paul Lewis, Peter Donohoe, John Lill, Noriko Ogawa, Nikolai Demidenko, Angela Hewitt, Freddy Kempf, Stephen Hough, Benjamin Grosvenor, Artur Pizarro and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.
All artists for the fifth Yamaha International Piano Series will be playing Yamaha’s CFX Grand that has redefined Yamaha's reputation on concert platforms throughout the world and was the choice of the winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2010, its year of introduction.
Yamaha’s Leanne Barrell comments, “We are extremely delighted to be able to extend the Yamaha International Piano Series into a fifth season and celebrate our 125th Anniversary by showcasing the CFX concert grand piano in the hands of some of the world’s finest pianists."
Joanna MacGregor was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Jubilee Honours 2012. She has appeared with many of the world's leading orchestras with such eminent conductors as Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Valery Gergiev, Sir Simon Rattle and Michael Tilson Thomas and has premiered many landmark compositions ranging from Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Django Bates to John Adams and James MacMillan. She has just made two appearances at the BBC Proms: in the Piano Concerto by the British composer Hugh Wood and Messiaen's Turangalila, conducted respectively by Ryan Wigglesworth and Vasily Petrenko, and made her debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival in Lincoln Center, New York in August 2012.
Known for her interpretations of Bach, as a recording artist Joanna MacGregor is a veteran of over 30 solo recordings, ranging from Bach, Scarlatti, Ravel and Debussy, to jazz and John Cage. Her own record label SoundCircus was founded in 1998 and has released many highly successful recordings including the Mercury prize-nominated Play (including music by Bach, Ligeti and Piazzolla) and Neural Circuits, with music by Messiaen, Arvo Pärt and Nitin Sawhney.
Currently Head of Piano at The Royal Academy of Music Joanna MacGregor was Artistic Director of Bath International Music Festival (2006-2012) and curated the multi-arts Deloitte Ignite Festival at the Royal Opera House in 2010. In the 2012/13 season she will curate a series of orchestral concerts at the Philharmonie in Luxembourg – ‘Aventures’ – in which she will also perform.
Malvern Theatres marketing director Fred Moroni said, “Malvern Theatres congratulates Yamaha on its 125th anniversary is once again grateful for its support, which has helped secure a distinguished line up of internationally renowned pianists. We sincerely hope this wonderful partnership with Yamaha will continue to bring the very best pianists here for many years to come.”
